After Wellstone's death, his staff released a transcript of his last 2002 midterm election campaign commercial, which had been slated for airing just before the November vote. "I don't represent the big oil companies," said Wellstone in the ad; "I don't represent the big pharmaceutical companies, I don't represent the Enrons of this world. But you know what, they already have great representation in Washington. It's the rest of the people that need it. I represent the people of Minnesota." Little else needs to be said; his own words are more than enough.

What can be said, on the other hand, about the Senate he served so well? What about the Democrats who now enjoy majority control but flee the very thought of representing the will of the American people? They called Wellstone "The conscience of the Senate," and that honorable title seems more true today than ever. Since that conscience died, the Democrats - time after time after time again - have performed unconscionable acts of cowardice, ambivalence and betrayal.

"Every now and then, we are tempted to double-check that the Democrats actually won control of Congress last year," read a recent editorial from The New York Times. "It was bad enough having a one-party government when Republicans controlled the White House and both houses of Congress. But the Democrats took over, and still the one-party system continues."

Indeed.

On Wednesday, House Democrats will once again vote on a bill to "end" the occupation of Iraq - without actually cutting off the funds that keep the occupation going.

Speaker Pelosi's latest plan is a "bridge fund" of $50 billion that sets a "goal" of "redeploying" our troops by 12-15-08. Even if the bill miraculously passes the Senate, Bush will veto it or take the money and openly defy the redeployment "goal." So why is Speaker Pelosi once again playing Bush's game?

90 Democrats have signed the "Peace Pledge" opposing any more Iraq funds except to safely "redeploy" our troops by Jan 09. But Pelosi's bill gives Bush the money he wants without the strict enforceable deadlines at the heart of the "Peace Pledge."

So we call on all "Peace Pledge" Democrats to honor their pledges by voting NO.

A new study by Democrats themselves puts the economic cost of the Iraq occupation at $1.6 TRILLION, or $21,000 per family. Every single penny has been wasted - not to mention the human cost to Americans and Iraqis and global hatred of the USA.

Why would Democrats want to give Bush one penny more? Bush has plenty of money. He has already spent 1.6 TRILLION dollars on this war (that comes to 21,000 dollars per family) and he has just signed a Pentagon bill asking for 40 billion dollars more. Enough is enough!!! And sometimes it's too much, and when it's too much, that's ENOUGH!!!!

All Congress has to do is JUST SAY NO and refuse to provide any new funds, and tell Bush to use existing funds to bring all our troops safely home

Washington - The Iraq and Afghanistan wars could cost the United States $3.5 trillion through 2017 if "hidden costs" like higher oil prices, care for wounded soldiers and interest on borrowed money are counted, congressional Democrats said on Tuesday.

The estimate, in a report by Democrats on the Joint Economic Committee, is about $1 trillion higher than an October 24 analysis of war costs by the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office, which mostly weighed direct war expenditures and borrowing costs of more than $700 billion.

Dear readers,

I just heard a clip on the Kucinich for President website where a celebrity (or leading Democrat...didn't catch his name)said that Kucinich was a great candidate and folks would vote for him, but that he had as much a chance of winning as a rainstorm in the desert. Guess what?? The following day four inches of rain fell in the desert!!!! HO HO HO Matilda

For money you can have everything it is said. No that is not true. You can buy food, but not appetite; medicine, but not health; soft beds, but not sleep; knowledge but not intelligence; glitter, but not comfort; fun, but not pleasure; acquaintances, but not friendship; servants, but not faithfulness; grey hair, but not honor; quiet days, but not peace. The shell of all things you can get for money. But not the kernel. That cannot be had for money. -Arne Garborg, writer (1851-1924)

ABC NEWS HAS EXCLUDED KUCINICH, GRAVEL, AND OTHER

In an arbitrary decision that shakes our democracy to its very core, ABC News has set debate criteria that exclude Dennis Kucinich, Mike Gravel, Chris Dodd, Joe Biden and Duncan Hunter from their Saturday debates. New Hampshire has a recent history of open debates. As a result of these exclusions the New Hampshire Union Leader newspaper has decided not to co-sponsor the debate.

Why I Believe Bush Must Go (by George McGovern, writing at the Washington Post)

Bush and Cheney are clearly guilty of numerous impeachable offenses. They have repeatedly violated the Constitution. They have transgressed national and international law. They have lied to the American people time after time. Their conduct and their barbaric policies have reduced our beloved country to a historic low in the eyes of people around the world. These are truly "high crimes and misdemeanors," to use the constitutional standard.

If our congress were conscientiously doing their job, ABC would lose its license!!

What kind of democracy do we have in the US of A when a giant medium like ABC and a humongous corporation like Disney are allowed to select which candidates can participate in national debates? How many more of our young people must give their lives to "spread democracy" in the world? WHAT KIND of democracy???

Our national motto should be in GOLD WE TRUST, not GOD but GOLD.

I Think,Therefore I'm Liberal - BuzzFlash.com's Review (excerpt)

Why is thinking so looked down upon in America?

Okay, beer and football and consumerism are okay, but is there anything wrong with using a God-given gift: a brain?

That's part of the reasons Republican Fundies and wealthy S.O.B.'s hate liberals so much: thinking is just plain un-American to them. It's enough to be great because one is born American!

This really says it all, don't ya' think?

The conventional wisdom has it that the only real measure of a President's legacy is the question, "Are you better off than you were 4 (8) years ago?".

A very self-important college freshman attending a recent football game took it upon himself to explain to a senior citizen sitting next to him why it was impossible for the older generation to understand his generation.

“You grew up in a different world, actually an almost primitive one,” the student said, loud enough for many of those nearby to hear. “The young people of today grew up with television, jet planes, space travel, man walking on the moon, and spaceships visiting Mars. We have nuclear energy, electric and hydrogen cars, computers with DSL, light-speed processing and…” He paused to take another drink of beer.

The Senior, taking advantage of the break in the student's litany, said, “You're right, son. We didn't have those things when we were young.....So we invented them. Now, you arrogant little shit, what are you doing for the next generation?” The applause was resounding....

I love senior citizens!

National Transportation Safety Board recently divulged they had funded a project with the US auto makers for the past five years. The NTSB covertly funded a project whereby the auto makers were installing black boxes in four wheel drive pickup trucks in an effort to determine, in fatal accidents, the circumstances in the last 15 seconds before the crash.

They were surprised to find in 49 of the 50 states the last words of drivers in 61.2% of fatal crashes were, "Oh, Shit!"

Only the state of Texas was different, where 89.3% of the final words were, "Hey Y'all, hold my beer and watch this!"
