Here's an article from the UK on the election in the US. Where will we stand in the eyes of the world in one month?

"More than two centuries ago, the Founders of this country set forth a procedure for Congress to follow in the event of grave abuse of power by the Chief Executive. That process is impeachment. In the face of the monumental deceit and disregard for the Constitution that we have witnessed on the part of the President over the past seven years, Congressman Kucinich’s initiation of this process is neither fanciful nor futile, neither vengeful nor vindictive; it is the sober fulfillment of his sworn duty as a Congressman to follow the law without regard to personal consequence and misguided political stratagem. It is, quite simply, an act of patriotism."

David Sedaris on "Undecided Voters"

I look at these people and can’t quite believe that they exist. Are they professional actors? I wonder. Or are they simply laymen who want a lot of attention?

To put them in perspective, I think of being on an airplane. The flight attendant comes down the aisle with her food cart and, eventually, parks it beside my seat. “Can I interest you in the chicken?” she asks. “Or would you prefer the platter of shit with bits of broken glass in it?”

To be undecided in this election is to pause for a moment and then ask how the chicken is cooked.

I mean, really, what’s to be confused about?

"Look what the Republican Party stands for: opposition to American working men and women, the channeling of trillions of dollars to the richest Americans, hatred of gays, hatred of immigrants, continued smoldering racism, opposition to desperately needed health care reforms, opposition to all environmental protections, spitting hatred for science, hatred for public schools, hatred of all those who are not fundamentalist Christians, support for torture, support for rendition, and support for the fantastically corrupt Bush-Cheney regime. The conservative cancer is the perpetuation of all the worst features of American life--intolerance, fear, prejudice, and tribalism."

Frank Rich

In its own independent attempt to penetrate the bailout, the Government Accountability Office learned that “the standard agreement between Treasury and the participating institutions does not require that these institutions track or report how they plan to use, or do use, their capital investments.” Executives at all but two of the bailed-out banks told the G.A.O. that the “money is fungible,” so they “did not intend to track or report” specifically what happens to the taxpayers’ cash.

Our little world we live in here in the United States, grocery stores on every corner, movie theaters, night clubs. Who do you think keeps our little world free of those things you read about in other little worlds. PEOPLE who do things that you would just rather not here or know about. Some people must do ugly things to keep the boogy man away so we can have our StarBucks in peace.

Dear World.....

We, the United States of America, your top quality supplier of the ideals of liberty and democracy, would like to apologize for our 2001-2008 interruption in service. The technical fault that led to this eight-year service outage has been located, and the software responsible was replaced November 4. Early tests of the newly installed program indicate that we are now operating correctly, and we expect it to be fully functional on January 20. We apologize for any inconvenience caused by the outage. We look forward to resuming full service and hope to improve in years to come. We thank you for your patience and understanding,

Sincerely, THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA

Robert Parry, Consortium News--- "The Republicans and their right-wing media allies are doing whatever they can to strangle the Obama phenomenon in its cradle; the mainstream media pundits are stressing the negative so they don't get called 'in the tank for Obama'; and the Democrats are shying away from holding the Bush-Cheney administration accountable for its crimes. None of these developments is particularly surprising. Indeed, they track closely to the political-media pattern that took shape the last time a young Democrat won the White House, when Bill Clinton became President in 1993."

The BuzzFlash Proposal from a Couple of Weeks Back Still Stands: "I have a modest proposal: if a U.S. Senator votes against the "Main Street Job Creation Act" (BuzzFlash's name for the "stimulus" bill), their state should lose half the funding from the bill. If both U.S. Senators from one state vote against the bill, the state loses its entire allocation from the legislation."

We congratulate President Obama and Congressional Democrats for passing the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act to start the difficult process of reviving our economy.

Sadly, Republicans are taking their marching orders from Rush Limbaugh, who declared "I hope [Obama] fails." Just three Republicans supported the recovery bill; the rest want big tax cuts for the rich.

It's time for Democrats to enact the big changes that Americans voted for, and ignore Republican obstructionism

You'd think after bankrupting our country, Republican leaders would rethink some of their ideas. Guess again.

They actually tried to replace the whole stimulus bill with tax cuts for the rich. And the worst part is, they were partially successful - they gutted funding from some of the most progressive programs, like school construction and affordable health care.

We need to make sure voters back home know what these Republicans are up to. Because if we don't, they'll do it again. They'll weaken or block every important piece of legislation this year. Our president tried the civilized bipartisan approach, which failed totally. Now I think it's time to take off the gloves, no? Matilda

The routine use of the filibuster as a matter of everyday politics has transformed the Senate's legislative process from majority rule into minority tyranny. Leaving party affiliation aside, it is now possible for the senators representing the 34 million people who live in the 21 least populous states - a little more than 11 percent of the nation's population - to nullify the wishes of the representatives of the remaining 88 percent of Americans." Treasury Official Quits Amidst Fraud Scandal

Brian Ross, Justin Rood, and Joseph Rhee, ABC News - "The man at the center of a fraud scandal at the Treasury Department has been allowed to quietly quit and retire from his job as a government regulator, despite allegations that he allowed a bank to falsify financial records and amidst outcries from investigators who say the case shows how cozy government regulators have become with the banks and savings and loans they are supposed to be checking on."

Last month, after announcing a bold blueprint for change on energy, health care, and education, President Obama said ... I know these steps won't sit well with the special interests and lobbyists who are invested in the old way of doing business, and I know they're gearing up for a fight. My message to them is this...... So am I.

What I think we all should be raising our voices about are the Blue Dog Democrats! Here, we finally have a man with intelligence in office, and a majority of Dems to back him and they are scattering like mice running away! For the last 20 or more years, I have dispared of the spineless actions of Democrats- now they are have not even the spine to back up their own president…I am so disgusted with them ! After years of being in the minority, you’d think they’d be pounding their chest and making some real noise supporting what the party platform is all about. Instead, they are siding with Republican toadies and lobbyist.

It's not the minority mortgage holders who were suckered into ARM mortgages by fast-talking swindlers who are responsible for our nuked economy; it's -- as BuzzFlash has been editorializing and headlining since the infamous Paulson announcement that the U.S. economy was about to implode last Fall -- the river boat gambling greed of Wall Street "Masters of the Universe" who made their fortunes on, in essence, gambling AGAINST our economy, against their investors, and against even the long-term interests of their financial firms
