27 October, 2001 I'm past being incredulous, worried, mad, etc. Now I'm TERRIFIED!!!!! Did John Ashcroft really say, referring to the curtailing of our constitutional rights.. "These changes are not temporary...they're permanent!!!"? What can we count on these days..........not the courts, not the media, not our elected Democrats (!!!)......not the CIA, the FBI, the Secret Service......and soon we won't even have our Constitution to fall back on. The poor, hard-working folks who don't have computers with which to find anything resembling the truth, and who are too tired to read the few honest journalists that are left....are simply getting their views from Television....and thus are having their brains anesthetized by rightwing propaganda. Sometimes I get the feeling that those of us who see the appalling truth of what is taking place are simply sharing our outrage with each other for comfort. THIS IS SIMPLY NOT ENOUGH!!! Our congressmen seem not the least bit interested in our mail.........unless we happen to be in their district. I've written literally hundreds of letters to them, to newspapers, to talk shows, you name it. Nothing seems to make a dent.....it just appears to get worse everyday. My yellow ribbon plan got off to a good start and looked like it was going to bear fruit, until September 11, and then it was understandably blown off the table....temporarily, I trust. I'm beginning to see a glimmer of hope, though, in the writings of some important editorialists lately, but I'm afraid the people we need to reach are not reading editorials. They're listening to radio talk shows, and these are preponderantly right wing, unfortunately. The other possibility is Hollywood. People still go to the movies and are swayed by what they see, if it's done properly. I think I'll write to Joe Conason...in fact, let's all write to him. He's making a movie, I've heard, based on his book "The Hunting of the President". Spielberg and Streisand and Martin Sheen and Newman and Redford....these people, I know, are seeing it right. How can we get them to help??? Any ideas?? I'm glad I'm 80 years old!!!! I may not have to watch this global destruction much longer. If I were a few years younger, I'd go back to the US of A and go door to door if necessary. You can tell I'm desperate. Keep the faith, dear friends, and stay in touch please.
